Andrea Menjura, CNCC Female Aviator

My name is Andrea Menjura. I was born in Manizales, Colombia in 1985. When I was 16 years old and without knowing much English, I moved to the United States.

Since I was little, I always wanted to become a pilot because my grandma used to live close to the airport and I would watch the airplanes take-off, and I would imagine myself flying into the skies. However, I knew my dream could not come true because, in Colombia, aviation is not a field that is open to everyone. Many people do not have the means to afford the education. In addition, in Colombia, aviation is a profession that discourages the involvement of females. Nonetheless, I think that being a pilot is one of the most rewarding things in life. My belief is that education will help me to "put wings" to this dream.

After two years of being in the United States, I got in the Mile High Flight Program. Through this program, I received a scholarship to learn how to fly. This scholarship paid for my training up to solo. I soloed in August 25, 2005 at Centennial Airport.

I graduated from Montrose High School in May of 2005. After I graduated, I decided to go to Colorado Northwestern Community College because I found out that the Aviation program has an excellent reputation, and it is less expensive than any other program in the United States. Besides, the classes are very small and personal, and the airport is only three miles away from the campus.

On December 7, 2005, I got my Private Pilot License. Currently, I am working on my Instrument rating.

In the future, I hope to become an airline pilot and travel all around the world. I also hope to help young people, especially adolescent girls, who want to become pilots. Additionally, after I graduate from CNCC, I will go to Metropolitan State College and get my Bachelor’s degree in International Business.
